Eric Watters Task 1

Dundonald St. Toronto
After much analysis of Thomas Struth's work, I decided to go in the direction of his beautiful architecture photos. The detail in his photos of city buildings inspired me to take photos of everyday buildings I would normally just walk by. After taking photos of commercial buildings, I found that this photo of the 3 houses was the most interesting.
Some issues were with the rain blob on my lens that I didn't notice until the editing process and my indecisiveness on if I like the tree or not.

A quote by Thomas Struth that I found really interesting because it also relates to me: "Oh yeah, I need to be in a picture mood. The objects I'm shooting have to attract me - they have to invite me to take more photos of them. If I'm not feeling it, I just stop. But to be honest, I'm also someone who likes to do nothing."

  1. Emily Pleasance: I like the tree a lot actually. I think it definitely draws my attention to the relation of the houses with their surroundings. Usually having an object slice the photo down the middle would be avoided, I think it does the photo well! Great job

  2. I agree with Emily, usually a tree in the dead centre might be too distracting and symmetrical but I think that the houses on either side being different heights makes it work a lot better. The fence on the left also plays into that.

  3. I also like the tree. Because it's not the main subject of the photograph, the central placement of the tree is not distracting - I think it works. I also like the shot in black and white. Great job!

  4. I really love this shot! It almost has an erie look to it! I definitely love the placement of the tree, I remember Alex showing us a shot like this on Monday and I loved it! The old critique I would have to say is the distracting black fence to the left takes away from the movement across the picture but other than Very nice job it really caught my eye and its very beautiful to the eye!!

  5. Wow ! Love this picture Eric! I agree with what you said about how they are ordinary buildings that you just walk by and seem to not notice. We may not necessarily notice them but you photographed this so it created more of a theme when placed all together. And the tree in the dead centre creates a sense of balance with the 3 houses!

  6. I really enjoy looking at this image Eric.
Thomas Struth uses the element of symmetry in his photo's and you have framed the tree in good position which turned out well in the photograph. It is a hard to imagine this image to be interesting without the tree.

I also think the imperfections of this photograph to be interesting, for some reason I really like the rain blobs on your lens.
